Health Systems On Opposite Ends For Proposed Plans

Personnel from the Cape Fear Valley Health System are divergent on plans from FirstHealth of the Carolinas to build a new ASC in Hoke County, N.C.. Cape Fear Valley Health System claims the population of the county can support only two operating rooms, and not three as the plan from FirstHealth claims. Both health systems have submitted plans for new hospitals in Hoke County. The plan, submitted in June by FirstHealth, outlines a $30-35 million facility consisting of eight inpatient beds and one OR. In August, Cape Fear Valley Health System, along with the Surgery Center of Pinehurst submitted a proposal for the Surgery Center of Hoke. This plan consisted of two additional operating rooms to be located on the campus of FirstHealth’s proposed hospital.

Inversely, Cape Fear Valley’s plan outlines a $79 million facility including 41 inpatient beds and two ORs. Representatives from Cape Fear Valley say the addition of the outpatient center is FirstHealth’s attempt to make up for careless oversights in their original proposal. FirstHealth expects to hear a final decision of its hospital plans by November and reach a decision on its ASC by January 2010.
