Medicare Mandate for RN Emergency Coverage Resolved with Anesthesia Partnership

The continued migration of procedures away from hospitals to the outpatient setting has fueled much of the explosive growth market for ambulatory surgery centers.  Yet, many ASCs are unable to capture the full upside of the trend due to understaffed or poorly organized anesthesia groups. In addition, this migration has also required Medicare to call for new mandates to ensure patient safety.  According to 416.46 (a) Standard: Organization and Staffing, “a registered nurse must be available for emergency treatment whenever there is a patient in the ASC.” Therefore, all licensed facilities are required to have an RN that can leave their current task to respond to the emergency without putting another patient at risk of harm.
