New Somnia White Paper Outlines How Anesthesia Departments Can Help Hospitals With Value-Based Purchasing (VBP)

The VBP program, established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will take effect in FY2013 and shifts Medicare payments to hospitals from a transaction-based payment system to payments based on clinical outcomes.

The white paper also describes the importance of an accountable anesthesia department in the transition to VBP’s outcomes-based performance payment system. Anesthesia has a direct impact on four of the 12 FY 2013 Process of Care measures established by CMS and a significant impact on all eight areas measured by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.
