Illinois Based MD Faces Charges For Numerous Accusations

Energy, Illinois based MD, Sukhdarshan S. Bedi and his three healthcare clinics pled guilty to numerous charges stemming from illegal distribution of controlled substances. Ultimately, Dr. Bedi plead guilty to charges of obstruction of justice, tampering with a witness and illegal dispensation of controlled substances such as methadone. Whether he had a choice to do so or not, Bedi agreed to surrender his medical license and withdraw his application for reinstatement of his DEA Registration. He is also to pay criminal restitution to the tune of $47,784.31 to the medical program administered by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.

Joint Venture Between Regent Surgical Health and Saint Mary’s Regional Promises Excellence

An authority in developing surgery centers and physician-owned hospitals, Regent Surgical Health, is partnering with Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center of Reno Nevada. The partnership, which is the second joint venture between Regent and Saint Mary’s, is aimed at developing and managing Summit Surgery Center at Saint Mary’s Galena. St. Mary’s is a member of Catholic Healthcare West system and has previously partnered with Regent in an outstanding turnaround of a sub par ASC in Reno.

Rockefeller Presses On For Healthcare Insurers Credibility

Health insurers state that they spend 87 dollars out of every dollar on healthcare, but that figure is, in fact, greatly lower. A leader in the public insurance option for health reform, Senator Rockefeller (D-W.Va), neglected to provide the actual amount of private insurers “medical loss ratios,” which is the percentage of premiums that go to healthcare, as opposed to admin fees and profits. Rockefeller also stated that the percentage of premium spent on healthcare is lower than the average for the largest for-profit insurance companies and for all and furthermore, for all insurers in the individual and small group markets which equate to business with less than 50 employees. Rockefeller focused on Cigna, stating that it had apparently failed to correctly account for as much as $5 billion in premiums for health insurance in the commercial group insurance market last year.

Large Corporate Hospitals Said To Cause Increased Healthcare Costs In Texas Town

In a recent statement by Physician Hospitals of America, it was announced that the clearing of physician-owned hospitals are the catalyst to driving up healthcare costs in McAllen, Texas. During the course of the past few months, the PHA states that concerns over healthcare costs in McAllen were incorrectly aimed at physician ownership. Through an investigation conducted by the Department of Justice aimed at uncovering illegal kickback arrangements at South Texas Health System, it was found that the large, corporate-owned hospital system is to blame for high costs. Funds that could have been used for patient care were passed along to the physicians through illegal kickbacks as a “thank you” for referring patients and added to the high healthcare costs. The South Texas Health System agreed to settle the investigation for the sum of $27.5 million.
